Shop till u drop baby!

There is no such thing as window shopping! Thats just code-word for real shopping!!

First of all I'm staying in a girl's dormitory with 5 other girls and it's so much fun! The last couple of girl's dorms i stayed at were deserted, whereas now it's full house! We had some nice girly chats about clothes, makeup, cleansers..oh and yes..our travels of course! :-P So i spent the day with one of my roomies who is from Turkey but lives in London. We spent the day roaming the streets of Singapore and it was so much fun! We started off doing some window shopping which turned into real shopping! But i must say i got some good deals so I dont feel guilty at all! Oh what the hell.. this is the first shopping i've done in my holiday!! SO i bought two of these dresses that are really in fashion right now.. theyre tight under the bust and then loose and flowwy! They're quite girly... i tried one on for fun and then i just loved it and bought 2 of them, each for about lm5 so those were a bargain! :-) I kept joking that they looked a bit like maternity wear...so my turkish friend and i joked about that all day!

We visited China town.. yes another China town how many can i possibly digest?!... but it's a really nice place and the buildings are very colonial style so it was nice to see! We also had a nice slurpy noodles there..whats new!

We're trying to figure out how we can spend New Year's Eve tomorrow so we've bene asking around and it seems like the best place is a beach party! So we're looking into that and i will keep you posted on th eoutcome in a day or two!

Hope you all have nice new year's celebrations! I'll be in 2007 seven hours before you so i beat you to it!! ;-)

Welcome aboard the puke-express!

I have huge admiration for people who travel with young children.
Lots of admiration but no compassion!

Today i took a 6 hour bus ride from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. When i got on the bus the first thing i spotted was this family climbing on with 2 young children, strollers, bags with nappies/bottles/softoys/wipies..you name it! How do they do it! SOmetimes i search in my bag for half an hour to find a tissue... you have to get a degree in organisational skills before you even think of having babies!

Anyway back to my story. Before the bus even left the parents started force-feeding their young daughter this liquid which i got the feeling was some kind of diluted medicine. When the job was done they hung around holding a plastic bag in case she puked it ..which she did.. but only a little... saving the rest of it for 10minutes later when the bag was no longer available for quick access!! This kind gesture of hers made the bus ride a very nice, comfortable but smelly experience! I was not amused and almost sick myself by the end of it! Besides that the children were seriously wrestless and whiney the whole time!

It must be so tiring being a parent! Thanks Ma and Pa for all your patience hahahaha!

Well i arrived in Singapore and i was pleasantly surprised by the place. I only got here a couple of hours ago but first impressions are great! I will be here for the next few days so i will tell you more about it soon. I am staying at a hostel which is in the Indian area of the city known as Little India (duh) and its quite interesting beacuse the streets are full of indian shops with blaring indian music! Quite funny! **Chuli Chuli jatchamari..** hahahaha something like that!! :-)

Tom Yam Soup

Hi everyone! I'm back in Kuala Lumpur for a couple of days and it's so hot here! On the islands it was better cos at least there were some sea breezes whilst here it's just sticky heat! I'm nearing my 3 weeks landmark here in Malaysia and right now I am really really craving some normal food!!! HeLP! Also i'm kind of pissed off cos i've been eating spicy food almost everyday and i still can't get used to it! My favourite is Tom Yam which is a noodle soup with lots of veggies and tomatoes..but i'm always blowing my nose and coughing whilst eating it!

Masay food is quite nice too. At a food stall it's usually buffet style so they give you a plate of rice and then you can add the veggies and meat from the pots and pans on display. I think it's mostly a lot of fish.. i mean like small whole fish (head n all) and sometimes these deep fried sardines (also head and all) that look gross. I tasted one yesterday...it tasted just like salty cardboard. Hmmm. I usually just stick to veggies.

So today i woke up with 'hruq ta' stonku' and i'm sure it's a clear sign that my body is tired of all this weird food... so later i'll be out on a mission to track down this food place Mark mentioned somewhere near the petronas towers where i might indulge to my hearts content! :-)

Watermelon Freak!

Ok this started off as a sweet Christmas message to you all.. but after lots of hassles with my camera i realised that there was something wrong with the sound so it was gonna be a mute message! By then i was bored and tired and decided to make a stupid-mute video!

This is how i spend my time on the beach!!

Happy Christmas everyone!! Love you very much and miss you all!!
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
The lesson of the day!

Today i learnt that it pays to be friendly! hahahahah! I made friends with some locals who hang out at my hostel and later i met them on the beach and i was treated like a queen. They gave me a sunbed and even brought me drinks all day, and joked that i was their queen! Bloody right i felt like one!

I met up with a couple of people and we spent the afternoon chatting on the beach, and then met up again in the evening for a couple of drinks, followed by dinner, followed by a christmas eve party at a reggae bar! Hehehehehe lots of fun! Had a really nice time! Though i havent become a rasta girl yet ;-)

Coconut Conundrum

Today i had another lazy day!! hahahah i'm enjoying this too much! I sleep until 10am..i have a late breakfast which is always accompanied by a banana milkshake yumm...and then around 12 i head to the beach and lie under the palm trees.

Oh my god i got the fright of my life last night!!! In the middle of the night a coconut fell against my window and made such a loud crash! Obviously i was knocked out of sleep and i literally flew out of bed and i was shaking with fear because my first thought was that someone was trying to break into my bedroom!! After a couple of seconds i figured it was a coconut! Pheeew! I was almost gonna go running to my neighbours bedroom hehehehe! Besides the coconut incident there are these crazy chickens (or cocks or whatever) and early in the morning they crow right behind my window! Grrrrr !

Tonight i spoilt myself with a western dinner. I had a nice Greek salad (feta cheese and olives) and a watermelon juice...a whooping grand total of 20RnG (lm1.80)!!! I'm used to 50c dinner so this was a real splurge..and i was actually thinking 'hmmm this is so expensive'lol!! Mur arani when i go to Hong Kong! lol

Anyways..gonna get to bed because another day of sunbathing lies ahead! lol! ;-)

Those sweet little things...

Yes this is definitely the life! Sun and sea! Today i had a lazy morning..woke up around 10:30 and after breakfast joined some people from my guesthouse who were on their way to a beach. The beachwas incredible but the water not so nice. I hope i can post some pics here soon but for now i havent got any cos i am using a film camera, not digital. Well not much to say about today cos it was all lazing on the beach..but oh ifogot!..i visited a crocodile park on the way back to the guesthouse. It was nothing special...crocodiles are kinda boring..they just sit very still and barely move so there wasnt much action! But of course they are HuGe and they had some cute baby ones too.

I am really impressed so far by how nice the people of Malaysia are. I haven't been turned away once and they all try to help..even if they barely speak english. Iforgot to mention something yesterday!!..remember the old toothless man i met on the last island?? Well i actually bumped into him again thefollowing day wheni was walking past the same tea shop i met him at. He had brought some family albums to show me.. and he also had a present for me! - two hats! hahahaha it was so unexpected and sweet of him. Then we took a photo together and he made me promise to send it to me by post when i develop it! hehehehe! Anyway i thought it was really nice of him to give me 2 hats! lol! A couple of days before that i was waiting on a bench reading a book and a lady who is from India but lives in Malaysia sat next to me and started talking to me. She told me that her family were visiting from India and she was taking them sightseeing. When i told her that i hope to go to India in February she was like ''oooh you can stay at my sisters place..i will give you the address and you can stay with her''. Hahahaha can u imagine? Yesterday i was on the ferry boat on my way to this island and i was curled up having a nap, when the guy next to me tapped me on the shoulder and when i opened my eyes he was offering me his jacket to put over my legs cos i was wearing shorts and i had goosebumps! hehehehehe! Well i just thought i'd write these sweet little things that have happened so far.

Sun, Sand, Sea and Jellyfish!

Finally i get a chance to blog. Yes i know..i've been slacking in the past couple of days! Today i arrived on the island of Palau Langkawi which is further north and also very close to the border with thailand. It is just a 2 hour ferry ride away from the island i was on previously so it was pretty easy getting here even though i got a bit seasick EUGH.

Im staying at a hostel on one of the most popular beaches on the island. Its raining today so the beach looks a bit gloomy but i'm sure its great on a sunny day. This beach was hit badly by the tsunami so you can actually still see abandoned resorts and broken houses. Its quite ghostly. Anyway after a nice nap i went for a swim and ate some noodles on the beach..and just relaxed and listened to music. Some local children were playing with seashells and they asked me my name...and then spent the whole time saying 'mar---tiiiin--aaaaaa' ! hahaha real cute!

Going back to two days ago, i was walking in Chinatown and this guy rode past on a bike and stopped to chat. When i told him im from Malta i was really surprised to get a huge smile and an exclamation of 'MAAAALTAAAA' instead of the usual 'Malta-Where'! Turns out this guy met 3 maltese people a couple of years ago. He is half malay and half thai, but he can speak english very well. We had lunch together and then got the bus to the beach where we met some other friends of his, one of them an italian girl married to a malay. Her 4 yr old daughter was on the beach with us and she drove me absolutely mad cos she was out of control, throwing sand, jumping on me, and she was drooling the whole time..mostly on me!! Eugh!! hahahaha! After the beach we went for dinner at an indian street stall where as usual it was a battle with 'what food could i possibly like?' My friend Zul suggested chicken tandoori but then i realised that i had to eat it with my hand and i was so grossed out! I was watching him dig in and i was trying to think of ways of how to eat it nicely. At least it was just chicken and bread... ALLA HARES it was rice with sauce and stuff! Yes i was watching people on the other tables just digging in with their hands and i was just thinking 'how do they do it!!' Zul was laughing at me but i guess he would freak out if he had to eat with a fork and knife lol!

Yeterday we visited the botanic gardens which was quite nice except that it was hot and humid so it wasnt exactly perfect weather to relax in a garden. Also there were these vicious crazy monkeys running around and i was afraid one of them would bite me! hahaha! Yesterday i had a fruit day... thats it!..no rice..no noodles...no eating with my hands! I need to detox! So i ate fruit all day...banana milkshake for breakfast, watermelon & pineapple for lunch, banana and apple for dinner, and banana pancake before bedtime! lol.. not bad! Zul joked that with all the bananas i ate i might look a bit yellowish today! I needed it thats for sure... i was actually happy to eat noodles today! :-)

Rickshaws + Yam Cha = China Town!

Goodbye green hills..hello sun and sea!! After a 6 hour bus ride and a ferry crossing I arrived on the island of Palau Penang, which is on the western coast of Malaysia. I was thinking of giving the place a miss and moving on to another island nearby right away, but i changed my mind and i'm glad about that. The main town on this island is mostly a China-town...i thought it would be a tacky China-town but actually i was surprised to find that it's very Beijing style. After a 30min walk from the pier i located one of the hostels recommended on my guide book... and as i peeped through the door to check if they had any available rooms i was immediately greeted by a old, toothless chinese man who said ''Hellooooooooooo'' with a huge toothless smile. I was instantly charmed. He said ''my name is lo.. not high but lo!'' hahahaha ok it's lame but you just had to hear him say it! So adorable! :-)

The hostel is actually like a huge old chinese house transformed into a hostel... it has a huge wooden door with a ledge so you have to step over it when you walk in, and really high ceilings and wooden floorboards. Its really authentic. Anyway the old chinese man Lo was trying to guess where i am from and when i said it is a small island in the Mediterranean he said ''aaaah malta!'' and told me that somebody from Malta had visited his hostel about 1 year ago. The reception desk had a glass top beneath which were paper notes from various countries, so i gave him a Lm2 note for the collection and he was over the moon and found place for it with the others. I'm sure if any other maltese walk in there in the future they will be pretty surprised to see it there!

So today I had a bit of a sleep in and then wandered the streets. The main town is quite small so you can get around easily on foot. I was walking through the streets taking some pictures and just enjoying the bustling streets when an old chinese man on a bicycle stopped to speak to me. He asked me where i was going and told me to be careful and always take care of my bag and never take a taxi alone. Then he shook my hand and told me his name and waved and rode away! Ha... so sweet! I walked another block and heard someone calling out to me. It was the same chinese man waving to me from a street stall on the opposite side of the street. I crossed and he told me to sit with him and ordered a glass of tea with ice and chatted with me for a while, telling me about his family and his life and asking about mine. We talked for about half an hour and it was so interesting. Then he shook my hand and got on his rickety-rackety bike and rode away! hahahahaha You just had to see him... this frail 80yr old man with 1 tooth left riding on a bike (yes theyre all toothless it seems!) :-P

After that i got a bus to the centre of the island where there is a tram that takes you up to the highest point on the island where there are spectacular views and some very crazy monkeys too. The plan was to walk to these botanic gardens but because its holiday season there were queues for the tram and i got up there too late. On the way back istopped for some dinner at this chinese stall and the food was so delicious! I think i will go back tomorrow and have some 'yam cha' which are these steamed buns with various fillings. They eat them at any time of day (kind of like our pastizzi) :-P

Tomorrow i'm heading for a beach in the north of the island, because the one near this town is actually like a port so its not good for swimming. Think about me... i'll be working on my tan! ;-) XXX

A cuppa tea please!

Did i say blue sky?? No seriously.. what blasphemous words! I wish i said nothing because sure enough today it was raining!!!
Today i had a relaxed morning... until the guy at my hostel came begging me to move to another room. Heheheheh now this hostel i'm staying at is seriously strange! Its like one big house that has been converted to small tiny rooms with these wooden thin partitioning. Last night i was trying to get some sleep but these two Australian girls next door where rambling on about their boyfriends...''and yeah yeah...in astraajjaaa this.. and Josh that... yeah yeah''. Sorry Mark..but why do you guys shout so much to speak?? :-P Anyways this place is really shabby... if the lock on the shower door is broken they wont unscrew the broken lock but they would just fix on a new one.. so everytime i get in the shower there are 4 broken locks and oh there's the good one! Ha! So much for laziness i guess.
Well after a late breakfast i took an afternoon tour which was mostly chinese & indian tourists, the 2 loud aaastraajja girls, and a nice German girl who i got talking with and spent the afternoon with. We visited a couple of plantations - mainly a strawberry farm and rose garden, and we also visited this butterfly park where they had this enclosed area filled with these butterflies in all shapes and sizes and as you walk in they actually perch on your head and your shoulders! It was quite surreal! This fairytale moment was ruined by the chinese group in our tour who were running around with their cameras getting all excited and screaming 'butterflieeeesaaaaaa'.. yes guys we know they are butterflies.
The most interesting stop was the tea plantation where first we saw these beautiful green hills where the tea is grown, and after we stopped at the tea factory where we learnt the process of tea making. One fact that i do remember is that it takes 5 kilos of tea leaves to make 1 kilo of tea.. so thats a lot of work for the guys who work the fields.
Well that is pretty much my day. Tomorrow i'm getting a 6 hour bus to one of the islands and hopefully it wont be raining there too!!

Curry and Tears

Greetings from the land of cool! Aaah this is just perfect! Today I left Kuala Lumpur and headed to the next region called Perak to a place called Cameron Highlands. These highlands are at an altitude of about 1400km above sea level and let me just start by saying that the weather up here is PERFECT! Goodbye sticky,humid,3-oclock rains - Hello blue skies and warm sunny days. Just to give you an idea i've gone from our August rih-isfel iboss to a nice October warm day! Now you know why i'm loving it!!

I left the city this morning and took a 4 hour bus ride to my destination....the trip was ok except for the last hour when the bus was zig-zagging its way up the hills on this narrow curving road with one side of the bus missing the trees and bushes for an inch...and the other side of the bus missing other vehicles coming from the opposite direction by an inch! I was actually more car sick then afraid. I figured the driver could do this trip with his eyes closed. The view was absolutely incredile...just rows and rows of green hills everwhere! When we finally arrived i left my bag at the hostel and went in search of something to eat.

Now before i delve into the food story i just thought i'd give you a little background information on Malaysia and it's people. Malaysia's population is currently around 22 million. Malays(those actually born in malaysia) make up about 57%, 27% are Chinese, 8% are Indians and the remainder others. From these figures you can gather that Malaysia is a very multiracial society. Sometimes there are tensions between the groups, for the most part everyone gets along, mainly because they have to since they co-exist. As regards religion, Islam is the state religion of Malaysia, but freedom of religion is guaranteed.

Anyways, so now that i explained the diversity of cultures in Malaysia you can just imagine the diversity when it comes to food. You can basically find lots of different food, ranging from chinese style rice and noodles to rich Indian curries. You name it you'll find it! So the past few days i've been playing it safe and have been eating noodles and rice and things that i'm relatively used to. TOday i decided it was time to swicth to Indian so i had a chicken curry. Waaaaaaa no words can describe the pain. The more i ate the more i felt like i was burning my insides. Now besides not being very good with spicy food i also know nothing about Indian food so that doesnt help much when it comes to choosing something from the menu. I like to think that if i persist i will one day overcome my sensitivity to spicy food. For now ill have to suffer.

Well here in Cameron Highlands besides enjoying the fresh clean air and the green hills there are also a number of nature trails as well as several tea plantations, strawberry farms and butterfly gardens so i think ill keep myself busy for the next few days. Also there is a nice cafe where they serve a delicious home-made apple pie so you know where to find me when ill be taking a break from that damn curry!! ;-)

The weather clock...

The day starts off sunny but at 3pm and i mean exactly 3pm you can hear a rumbling sound in the distance .. *kkrrrrraaaaakkkkkwwwwww* and in exactly 30 seconds flat its pouring down on your head..and i dont mean drizzle.. i mean torrential rain!! (Woll remember our days in vietnam? once he thought someone spat at him from a window above but 1 second later it was pouring down on us... rain not spit :-p ) hahahaha Anyway, isn't it weird that it always rains at the same time?!

Nothing much to say about today - i just roamed around the city... found a street market where i had a late lunch. I stopped at this Chinese-looking street stall and after i sat down i realised it was all Hong Kong theme cos they had huge posters on the wall and the food on the menu was listed with names of places in Hk. hehehe i thought it was quite funny. Unfortunately they didnt have chicken feet on the menu but i ordered noodles with duck and obviously the meat was served with bones and all. Why oh why do they do this?! Well i guess it could have been worse.. i could have got duck feet in my bowl.

This market was also packed with stalls selling Durian fruit (Ma nixtrilek wiehed?) and im telling you it stinks! They actually say it tastes delicious but i swear it smells so bad i dont think i could get round to tasting it. Besides the food there was this funny guy standing near his parked motorbike and on this bike were about 10 cats all curled up sleeping on each other! His motorbike seat was covered in leopard print material to match! hahahah i had no clue what the hell he was doing. It was hilarious... i wish i took a photo! I will definitely go look for him next time.

Tomorrow i'm leaving KL and getting a bus to Cameron Highlands which is a couple of hours away. There is some great trekking and some nice places to see so i'll keep you updated from there!

Baby, it's cold outside ...

Those of you who know me well know that i'm crap when it comes to surviving in hot weather! Its almost a shame considering that i come from a relatively warm island and i should know how to live with it! This morning, in the kitchen of my hostel a guy asked me if i'm British because 'you are white as a ghost' he said. 'Gee thanks'...havent had the chance to sunbathe yet!!

Back to my initial point: it is so unbelievably hot!! Why do i have so much trouble dealing with this!! It makes me mad. I left my hostel this morning and within 15 minutes of being outside my hands and feet were swollen and within 30 minutes my clothes were sticking to me! Eugh! I actually managed to survive the whole day outdoors: visited the KL park - an orchid garden and a bird park, visited an area known as China town but not too impressed..mostly lots of street stalls selling absolute junk... had a plate of sweet&sour chicken with rice for lunch..and yes..it wasn't supposed to be spicy but i drank a whole bottle of water and wiped my tears!

After that i visited the Petronas Towers... the worlds tallest building standing at 140 hmmm gotta check my facts... but well trust me its hiiigh! Its the one in that film... umm.. whats the name of that film.. the one with Catherine zeta jones & who was that other actor!... GOLDFISH memory!!! The heat is drying up my last few memory cells! Mr. Always-got-his-facts-right will help me out here im sure :-P Anyways it was really impressive!

And after that... like a hallucination in the desert.. there it was... Starbucks!!!! Oh I love Starbucks!!! And yes i know i hate coffee but they have the most amazing Frappuccino with chocolate & cream & no coffee YUMM.. I MISSED YOU!! By the way ... In Hong Kong i gained 7 kilos and it was probably all due to to many frappuccinos... so i drank mine today with a slight tinge of guilt and promised that i wouldnt have another one for at leaaast another week.

Sure.

Revived from a coma...

I had an 18hour sleep... i never even thought it was possible to sleep so much.. but i actually did it.. from 9pm to 3pm!! hahahaha ummm i guess i needed it!

I went for a walk in the area... its mostly department stores around here. It's raining and it's about 90% humid.. i swear its gross! I just walked around the department stores for a couple of hours enjoying the airconditioning, ate a decent meal, and waited for my body to wake up from the coma-sleep i had! :-p

today was just lazy-mode. Tomorrow ill start in tourist mode :-P

I just wanted to say thanks for such a fun 'last' night together!:-)I cant believe that just 2 nights ago we were all laughing away eating our chinese take-out and now i'm so far away from all of you! :-( i miss you guys already..maybe you should come and visit! (woll aqbad envelope u ibda itfa l-ghaxar-lirijatbladdocc!) :-P These are my 2 favourite photos ;-)
The weirdness of it all !!

Greetings from Malaysia :-) ! This is soooo weird!!! I've been here only a couple of hours and i think it still hasn't sunk in that i have flown right across the world. I guess i'm just gonna have to pinch myself and get over it! :-)

First things first. I am in love. I can't believe it took me all this time to discover Emirates Airlines!! The flight was obviously a tough one cos planes are never really comfy but i swear i was thrilled to be pampered by the crew. Besides the seats being super comfy compared to other airlines, each seat had its own little screen with an endless selection of films, games, tv series u name it!! Haha lufthansa..u wont be seeing me again! ! Also..everyone says how great shopping at the dubai airport is.. but i really had to see it with my own eyes to believe it cos it was just incredible. I was there at 2am but the place was just packed with people shopping to their hearts content. Maybe i'm just easily impressed! :-P Just seeing people shop made me wanna shop too! I think ill be coming home with an empty suitcase just so that i can fill it in dubai!!

Well the flights were entertaining but i haven't slept much in the past 48hours not to mention the 3 days leading up to sunday. My first impression of Kuala Lumpur is positive. Unfortunately it was raining today so everything looks a bit dull... but it seems like a nice city and the people are sooo nice! Everybody was running to my help and wanting nothing in return which is quite rare in asia (at least the experience i've had so far)! When i was walking in the street looking for my hostel this old toothless man came running to show me where i had to go! He was all gestures and smiles cos he could't speak a word of english! The smells in the street and the food stalls remind me a lot of thailand so it's nice that it feels just a little bit familiar.

Anyways, having skipped through 7 time zones in 12 hours i need to get some serious sleep and hopefully get enough energy to go out and do something tomorrow! I'm feeling so tired i think im on the verge of hallucinating!
Ha mmur niekol noodles.. u sodda ! ;-)
